Who Exhibits? : What's Offered : Publishers : Remainder Companies : Promotional Publishers
Remainder companies depend on the fluctuating supply from the new book publishing world. Promotional books arose when remainder companies had shortfalls in this supply of titles. The "created bargain book" was produced specifically for the bargain market that remainder books had pioneered. It has now grown into a large and diverse industry of its own.
Some "promotional books" are reprints, others are original material. The "promotional book" covers the same range as regular publishing and in fact overlaps it. Books produced include literary classics, scholarly monographs, original art books, children's books, and everything else.
Because the promotional publishing industry includes so many different kinds of books, there has been a lot of controversy about the best term to use for this industry. Some publishers who produce books that are perceived by outsiders to be in this category do not consider themselves to be promotional publishers at all. The term is used here as a compromise.
