What is a White Sale?

A white sale is when a publisher decides to steeply discount a book to sell directly to retail bookstores. White sales are a particular favorite of CIROBE attendees as they can buy unique, interesting titles in quanitites appropriate for their stores, both from individual publishers and publishers rep groups and consortiums.

The white sale discount is determined by the individual publisher, and is usually designed so that the bookseller can resell the book as a bargain book. (An example of a white sale price is 20% of list price, but this varies widely.) White sales offer publishers the opportunity to realize a higher percentage of list price per book, but the books are sold in smaller quantities than with a bid list.
